Student Led Parent/Teacher Conferences

I have decided to change things up a bit for our Parent/Teacher conferences this year.  I want to thank everyone who signed up for a conference time during our Open House and I am sorry that I am changing things around. Instead of meeting with only the parents for 15 minutes I have decided to have the kids be a big part of the conference process.

Families are asked to sign up for a 25 minute time slot.  During that time, your child and you will be in the classroom rotating through 5 stations. The stations will be: Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Meet with Mrs. Blake.  Each station will last 5 minutes. During your time at the station, your child will teach you about his/her skills and progress for the year so far.  There will be directions and an activity for your child to lead you though. This puts the power of learning in the hands of the students.  They are able to show their accomplishments and take pride in their work.  Students will have a better understanding of their learning and why we do what we do each day.  It will also address some of our Speaking and Listening Common Core standards.

I ask that you please show up on time as each session is a limited amount of time with a lot to get though.  Below is a link to the Sign Up Genius where you can sign up for a Student Led conference time slot. If you are unable to make it on Thursday, October 22nd, please email me and we will set up another time.

Thank you for your help and support with our new conference set up and I hope you enjoy it.  The students are VERY excited to teach you. :)

Sincerely,
Mrs. Blake

We are going on a field trip!!!

We are going on a field trip!!!  We finally heard back from transportation and we have been approved to go to Tom's Farm in Huntley on Monday, October 5th.  The cost of the trip is $9 per student.  This includes a pie pumpkin, 3 gourds, a wagon ride into the field, tour of the animals, tour of the vegetable barn, a grain talk and transportation costs.

We will be eating lunch at Tom's Farm so we are asking you to please send your child's lunch in a paper bag with your child's name on it and make sure all lunch materials are disposable. If you need a paper bag, please let me know.  I have a ton!

Because our trip is quickly approaching, we are asking you to please fill out and return the permission slip and send in your child's $9 by this Thursday!  This will allow us to finalize everything before our trip.

If you have any questions, please email me.  We are so excited to have this opportunity to visit a real working farm!

Sincerely,
Mikee Blake

Scholastic Orders

Good Morning!  A couple days a go I sent home a Scholastic book order with your child.  This is a great way to bring new books into your house for far less than going to the book store to buy them.  Every time you order a book from our scholastic flyers the classroom gets points.  I am able to use those points to purchase new books for our classroom.  As you can guess, our classroom books get pretty abused throughout the year, especially the high interest books.  This allows me to get new copies of books or books that fit the kids every changing interests.  This way everyone has books in the classroom that they WANT to read.  We all know reading is MUCH more fun when you have something that peeks your interest.

This month, Scholastic is running a special.  Not only will I receive points for each book you order, but I have the opportunity to get bonus points for the amount of money our classroom orders, up to 5000 points!!! That can get us almost 400 new books in the classroom!!!!!

To order books, visit www.scholastic.com.  Click on the book club link. Our class code is: GVPXK   Book orders will be open until September 25th.

If you have any questions, please email me and I can help.  If you are not comfortable ordering online you can always return the order form attached the the Scholastic flier and I will put the order in.  Please make all checks out to Scholastic Book Club.

Superhero's x-ray vision

Every superhero has a special power and our class superheros are no different.  Today we unleashed our x-ray vision super power during our math hour. If you get a chance in the next couple of days have your superhero show off his/her x-ray vision.

All you need is 10 objects and a cup.  First, line up the 10 objects in 2 rows of 5, one above the other.  Next, have your superhero close his/her eyes or turn the other way or even leave the room so they cannot see what you are doing. Next, take some of the ten objects and hide them under the cup.  Have your superhero use his/her superpowers to "see" how many objects are under the cup.  It's AMAZING!!! Your superhero is able to see right through the cup and know exactly how many objects are under there!!!

And the winner is....

We are very excited to announce the winning name of our school mascot is TIMBER!!!!!  Thank you for all your support in helping our name win the contest.

Math Homework Tonight

In Math, we were working on combinations of numbers that equal six using addition.  For homework, I have sent home a blank sheet of number bonds.  Work with your child to create number bonds that equal 6.  Then cut out the number bonds and write an equation on the back of the card that matches the number bond on the front. These cards will be kept at home to help your child practice his/her addition facts for the number 6.  THIS PROJECT DOES NOT NEED TO BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL TOMORROW. If you have any questions, please email me. :)

Name the Tiger Contest

On Wednesday we had our Back to School PBIS assembly.  We saw great performances from all the teachers at Timber Trails on how we should and should not act in our school.  At the end of the assembly we had a wonderful surprise and our new school mascot came out to introduce himself!  The only problem is, he doesn't have a name :(

So we are having a contest to name our tiger this week.  Each class was able to vote on a name for the tiger. We have put each classes choice on a container and will have them out before school and during lunch every day.  Students are invited to vote for their favorite name by placing change in the container of the name they like. At the end of the week, we will count up all the jars and the name with the most money will be our tiger's name. :) Our class has voted and has chosen Timber as their name for our tiger.  Hopefully we will raise enough money in our jar to win!!!! Jars will also be out on Curriculum Night so you can see all the names available and vote for your favorite.

Back to school Picnic

Join us for our PTO's Back to School Picnic Wednesday, August 19th from 6:30-8:00!  There will be food, face painting, an obstacle course and a big slide.  Bring your chairs and blankets to have a picnic.

This is a great way to meet other families in our classroom as well as have a fun filled evening with the family.  My family and I will be there for most of the picnic (we have to leave at 7:15 to get my little ones ready for bed) and I am so excited to see all my new and old students. I hope you can make it!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Blake

Welcome to 1st Grade

Welcome to our classroom!  I am very excited to be starting my 12th year teaching and my 6th year at Timber Trails.  I will be using this blog as a way of updating families of our activities in class as well as communicating any important information to you.  I would like to post pictures from our class but will not do so until everyone has signed our classroom Blog Permission Slip (going home the first couple days of school). If you have any questions please email me at michaelynblake@u-46.org or comment on this post.

I am looking forward to a great year with you and your children!
